Personally, I can't concentrate if it's too quiet. However, the nonsensical hubub of general talking (i.e. in class, or having the t.v. on) makes things worse. I need something. I need to have some kind of followable rhythm and regularity. Classical/instrumental music, like soundscapes, works best for me. Particularly violin. 'Course, I am partial to violin.

Anybody else like that?

I'm like that. At least almost.

I often start by listening to one song while browsing on the 'Net for writing prompts. One catches my eye--if I don't have the right music, I'll switch. Like if I'm writing something peaceful or contemplative or hard-thinking, I need some soundscapes.

Though I don't pick soundscapes by instrument. More like the whole 'music.' Like I usually need a rhythm: "Earth" from the Gladiator soundtrack is wonderful. It's slow, graceful, and has a solid rhythm. It keeps me going.

I NEED music! Especially in the idea-germination stage, a good piece of music can help me hold that fleeting imagery in my head when I'm trying to figure out what the story is and where it takes place.

After that it's not QUITE as necessary, but extremely helpful. It can be almost any genre all the way from classical to metal as long as it suits my mood! (Country and rap not permitted.)

I guess that's kind of true for me. Well, at least once I've got an idea. Most of my ideas come to me while I'm doing stuff like dishes or laundry or walking. When I'm busy. And then when I actually sit down to write and figure it out, music must be louder than everything else.

Wow. You can write to metal? Like headbanging metal? I can only listen to that when I'm like...extremely hyper. And no rap, agreed. Yucky rap-crap. Country...eh. It depends. Some of it I can listen to. It's mostly on a song-to-song basis. Like I hate most Carrie Underwood stuff (with a passion...she makes me gag), but "Before He Cheats" has become like...my theme song while I'm writing this one piece.

Yeah, actually it works out pretty well. I like to write in a coffee shop, so it's good for blocking out chatter...while not being drowned out itself by chatter. Wink

This last November I discovered that I write the fastest to Surf instramentals. I mean, I love surf guitar, and I was going to say I write best to it, but I desided that remained to be seen.

when I started listening to surf for writing, I had days where I was writing five to seven thousand consistantly, with one nine thousand day for good measure. I found a really good surf music podcast at http://www.garagepunk.com/

Hmmm... "I need music!" is the correct answer much of the time, but other times if I'm really in the zone, I can write quite well to silence. I think the music is helpful to get me started and in the zone - after that, if it fades out I'll often keep writing in silence, sometimes not even notice.

I also have some stories and some characters with theme songs. For those, it helps quite a lot to actually be listening to the theme songs as I'm working on them. :)
