Thread for the newest SFFmuse members and those like me who have odd gaps of memory or just don't notice features until I use them. If you have a question about ANYTHING on the forums, post it here. If you like explaining things (and I *know* some of y'all are science fiction writers, that goes with the turf!) this is a place to get away with an As You Know Bob, when someone else put their paw up to be Bob! Ain't it cool?

When you are posting a reply (as I am now, heehee), there are a few things at the top of the reply box thinger, buttons and such. Below the line of buttons for italics, underlining, bold, and the like, there are two drop-down link lists, one that says "Font colour" (hurrah for the British spelling), and one that says "Font size".

Highlight the text you want changed, select your color from the drop-down list, and the proper tags will appear around the text you highlighted.

IMHO, it's best just to use the default color, because then everyone can read it. For example, yellow shows up very nicely on the Galaxy skin, but not at all nicely on the one that has a background that looks like parchment. (Forgot the name)

BTW, what does robert mean by As You Know Bob? I feel stupid asking this, but this is the right place, is it not?

"As You Know Bob" is one of the great bloopers of SF as recorded in the Turkey City Lexicon. That's something I tripped on linked at Critters, it can probably be googled by itself.

It means a clumsy explication in a science fiction novel, especially if it's something that doesn't need to be explained at all for the story to work. Usually for pages of dense science tidbits that don't push the plot forward. It usually involves some bland character walking up to a science geek in the story and asking things like "But how does television work" or something like that. (to use an example that isn't SF any more but used to be when this was common in stories.)

Heehee, I was reading the Turkey City Lexicon just yesterday. *goes off to search for link*

"Gee, Shirlee, look at all the grass! It's so green!"

"Well, as you know, Bob, grass isn't really green. It's really yellow, but it reflects the sky, so it looks green. When it dies, it looses it's reflective properties, and that's why it turns yellow."

"Gosh Bob, why are you telling me something I already know?"

"Because the reader didn't know it yet!"

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: check for an intro thread where the author might've written down what they're looking for. Some of them want full-fledged detailed critiques, some are just there for encouraging remarks. Birthright (my most recent one (if I ever get around to putting it up)) will just be there for reader amusement. ;)
