7) Grave Sins by Jenna MacLaine

Just as good as the first. Some very interesting stuff here about her vampire mythos; she seems to draw a lot from Celtic mythology. The Morrigan is their patron goddess, and an interesting bit of worldbuilding is that vampires can't be killed with wooden stakes or the like unless the wood is from one of the ten sacred trees. Very different, and I'm liking it.

8.) Bound by Sin by Jenna MacLaine

As good as the previous two, and now I have to wait for the 4th. Provided there is a 4th. Confused

Offhand so far this year, fiction wise:

3 role playing games, 2 discworld novels, 2 YA novels and probably more graphic novels than my bank account likes.

9) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

Think Harry Potter -- except instead of a wizard, the mc is the son of a Greek god, and instead of an English boarding school, he's off to a summer camp for the demigods, culminating in the mc and his friends embarking on a Herculean-style Quest. The author clearly knows his Greek mythology, and there's a lot of little details in the worldbuilding that are fascinating.

Do short stories count? Been reading quite a few of those lately. So far, I've read Amy Tan's Two Tickets and Raymond Carver's Cathedral. Liked both of them, really got more out of Carver's piece, though. Didn't particularly care for the "common place but precise language" he boasts of using right at first, but it really grew on me. The story's actually fairly subtle. Really appreciate subtle writing.
Still trying to finish James Frey's A Million Tiny Pieces.

Think we'll go with the nanowrimo philosophy on this: if you think it counts, we think it counts too. :D

I've checked out a couple Poul Anderson books from the library, and got a box of misc used books from a friend. Haven't gotten around to reading any of them yet though. Must fix that soon...

10) Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione

Love this series and the setting. Very heavy on the sex, but unlike a lot of erotic romances out there, Ione weaves it into the plot. None of it is gratuitous. And she's got some of the most interesting angelic and demonic races and worldbuilding out there.

Much more Terry Pratchett.

Night Watch, Bromeliad Trilogy (Truckers, Diggers and Wings), The Truth, Making Money, Going Postal, Hogswatch, Thief of Time. It's been a rough winter for pain and I'm spending a lot more time just reading Pratchett than doing anything.

What's the Bromeliad trilogy like? Oddly, I've never picked it up.

11) Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley

I wasn't too thrilled with this, but it's been hyped up for years, and I think I expected something different from what I got. The writing style is very Old Fantasy -- lots of exposition, lots of telling, not so much dialogue and inner thought. I didn't really connect with the characters, and thus it didn't really work for me. But I think that's more an incompatibility with style than a fault with the story; I could see it working very well for someone looking for something different.

13) Seduced by Shadows by Jessa Slade

This one disappointed me. Awesome premise, great worldbuilding, but the characterization didn't hold up. The lead heroine is a disabled thanatologist who ministers to the dying... which seemed really cool to me, but the character fell flat for me; it's hard to describe, but it lacks that "spark" that brings characters to life. The lead hero, Ferris Archer, only seems to exist to serve as her romantic interest, but the romance has no real spark either. The author makes the mistake of conflating sex with love, and a couple of sex scenes amidst bickering characters does not a romance make.

SPOILER. I was also very annoyed by a scene out of nowhere at the end of the book, where Sera goes to hell, and finds her mother there. Her mother committed suicide, and that's given as the reason she's there -- but then there's a comment made that the reason she is there is because Sera is keeping her there. It's never really explained what happens to her mother, because Sera leaves hell pretty immediately and kicks ass on the big baddie. It's very confusing, and the idea that the character is responsible for her mother going to hell because she's still grieving for her death... well, I find that pretty offensive.

Hrm. Via amazon, apparently the MMC has met many men ridden by demons but never a woman and OMG!

That, alone, would have led me to not read the book I think.
